Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
